Downtown Anchorage serves as Alaska’s best example of big-city life. This area of Anchorage, year after year, is at the top of everyone’s “most desirable” list, and for good reason. While the 1970’s population boom means that much of Anchorage is fairly new construction, downtown Anchorage has much richer history. As Anchorage became the established central location to access the vast Alaskan landscape, downtown is the area where the original town-site was founded. It has deep roots in the history of the State itself. The close proximity to the port, railroad, major roadways, and the airport still factor into this areas diverse businesses today.
It is fairly common downtown to see more traditional and smaller houses, frequent to the time period they were built. It is also home to some fantastic newer luxury condominiums. Downtown features some of Alaska’s priciest real estate and land. Stretching from the North side of Westchester Lagoon across Ship Creek to Government Hill, there is a unique mixture of retail, industries, dwellings, nightlife and restaurants. It is unquestionably the part of Alaska which most feels like a big city, with the skyline to match. Landmarks include Town Square, The Coastal Trail, Ship Creek, The Performing Arts Center, and The Anchorage Museum. It is also home to the famous “Fur Rondy” festival and the start of the iconic “Iditarod”. Definitely not short on activities to keep you busy during the cold winter months, downtown Anchorage can be a perfect place to call home.
